Commenting on the news that the European Union is to provide £19million of vital funding for further development at Newquay Airport, Parliamentary candidate Stephen Gilbert said: "This is a good day for Cornwall, thanks to hard work on the part of Liberal Democrat councillors and campaigners."

Stephen added: "Whether it is Newquay Airport, the dualling of the A30, or providing Broadband access across the county, we are showing that our campaigns can really make a difference, despite the hurdles put in Cornwall's way by successive Conservative and Labour Governments."

Dan Rogerson MP congratulated Cornwall County Council for securing the funding and said:

"This is great news for Newquay and for Cornwall as a whole. The airport is vital to our future economic development. It's well on the way to being financially sustainable on its own but it needs the helping hand of this European funding, and the Airport Development Fee, to make sure it gets there. It is a clear tribute to the work of Cllr Andrew Mitchell, the Project Director, Chris Cain and their team that we have gained this vital support."
