NEWQUAY TO GET EXTRA RAIL SERVICE2.50.26pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 16th May 2008
Commenting on the news that Newquay is to benefit from an increased rail service from the end of the year, Stephen Gilbert, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for the town, said "This is good news for Newquay and will be a real boost for rail users. The next step in the campaign is to secure the land necessary to increase Newquay's platform capacity." Stephen Gilbert was speaking after First Great Western purchased an extra train to run solely between Newquay and Par meaning that there will be, from next year, seven trains a day - and increase from the current 5. Stephen Gilbert added: "The new service and timetable will be a big benefit to local people and means that the train can now be used to leave Newquay and get to St Austell for the start of the working day which is good news for commuters and students." "The next step is ensuring that local authorities work together to secure the parcel of land next to Newquay station so that the capacity of the station is increased."
