St Austell new MP, Steve Gilbert, has given his backing to the merger of the Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum with the South West Lakes Trust.

Speaking after attending the launch party for the new venture, Steve Gilbert said:

"The China Clay Museum plays a vital role in keeping alive the heritage of the communities in the heart of Cornwall.

"While I was the manager of the centre, I saw at firsthand how the recession was hitting local tourist attractions. This merger is an important step towards securing and safeguarding the future of the site and I welcome it."
